Coaching is one of the most effective ways to climb harder and stronger whilst improving your technique and achieving your long term climbing goals.  It is effective for everyone whether you are a relative beginner looking to start out with the best possible technique or an elite climber wanting to train for substantial goals.  Coaching can improve your climb fitness and help ensure you climb with the best technique.  Our coaching programmes are devised by our in house coaching team.  The coaching team has a wealth of experience, both practical and theoretical, that can help you improve your technique and your grade as well as opening up new routes for you to enjoy!  Evidence shows that as little as a one hour session with a coach can make a significant different to your climbing style and your grade.  We offer a range of coaching programmes from one to one sessions to longer 5 or 6 week programmes.  Please call the centre for more information.

If you are looking to become a qualified instructor the Quay can provide a range of training courses leading to formal qualification or site specific qualification.   We regularly host the training and assessment days leading to the Mountain Training instructor qualifications including the Climbing Wall Instructor, Climbing Wall Development Instructor and the Rock Climbing Instructor.
Instruction and assessment is delivered by Mountain Training qualified instructors from The Adventure Fitness Company using the Quay as a base for instruction.  Other centres or outdoor crags will also be visited where appropriate for the course.  These awards are designed and accredited by Mountain Training England.  Before attending a course candidates should register for the course on the Mountain Training website (www.mountain-training.org).

Climbing Wall Instructor:  The Climbing Wall Instructor qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to supervise climbers on purpose built artificial climbing walls and boulders. It is ideal for people who work at climbing walls or at venues with permanent or mobile climbing towers. There is also an optional Abseil Module (often run in conjunction with Climbing Wall Instructor training and assessment courses) which is all about supervising abseiling on artificial structures.

Climbing Wall Development InstructorThis qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to teach lead climbing skills on indoor or outdoor artificial climbing walls and structures with fixed protection. It builds on the skills gained through either the Climbing Wall Instructor or Rock Climbing Instructor qualifications, one of which must be held in order to access the scheme.

Rock Climbing Instructor:  This qualification is all about supervising safe climbing and abseiling sessions on single pitch crags and artificial structures. Whether you’re a parent, a volunteer or an outdoor centre instructor, the Rock Climbing Instructor qualification trains and assesses experienced rock climbers to instruct climbing.
