If you are looking to become a qualified instructor the Quay can provide a range of training courses leading to formal qualification or site specific qualification. We regularly host the training and assessment days leading to the MLTE approved instructor qualifications including the Climbing Wall Award (CWA), Climbing Wall Lead Award (CWLA) and Single Pitch Award (SPA). Instruction and assessment is delivered by MLTE qualified instructors from The Adventure Fitness Company using the Quay as a base for instruction. Other centres or outdoor crags will also be visited where appropriate for the course. These awards are designed and accredited by Mountain Leader Training England. Before attending a course candidates should register for the course on the MLTE website (www.mountain-training.org). All candidates must be aged 17 and over and have experience climbing on at least 15 different occasions at three or more different climbing centres (see MLTE website for specific course requirements). Check out our events page for the most up to date course dates.
Climbing Wall Award: the CWA is for individuals wishing to instruct climbing at indoor climbing walls. It trains and assesses candidates on the skills required to supervise groups in an indoor wall environment and is ideal for those working with schools, youth groups or who wish to gain an instructor qualification. Training is run over 2 days by an MLTE qualified instructor. The course syllabus includes climbing techniques, tope rope supervision and teaching as well as supervision and management of groups. Bouldering is also part of the course syllabus. A separate module covers Abseiling.
Climbing Wall Lead Award: the CWLA is for anyone wishing to instruct lead climbing on indoor climbing walls. Training is run over one day by an MLTE qualified instructor and includes lead climbing techniques, supervision, risk factors and rescues.
Single Pitch Award: the SPA is for individuals wishing to become qualified to lead groups climbing outdoors on single pitch climbs. The course is run over two days and led by an MLTE qualified instructor. Most of the course is delivered outdoors.
We can also deliver Site Specific Training for leaders of groups, typically school or youth groups, who wish to instruct their groups at the Quay. This training equips leaders to run group sessions safely and creatively in the centre. Once trained and assessed candidates will be expected to shadow and participate in a number of sessions with our instructors before being assessment for the Site Specific Status. For more information about Site Specific Training please contact our Centre Manager, Gavin Atkins: firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone 01392 426 850.
