When the sunny weather comes why not try climbing outdoors with the Quay. Our team of instructors are now running a full range of outdoor courses and guided sessions to make the most of the summer climbing and fabulous crags on nearby Dartmoor or the sea cliffs of Portland. We can help you make the transition from indoor climbing to real rock, or work with you to extend your confidence leading, sport climbing or bouldering. Our outdoor course menu has a range of courses from families looking for a fun activity to do together to experience indoor climbing looking to learn the techniques required for sport or trad climbing. All courses are run on local crags, mostly based in and around Dartmoor, or for sport climbing we will head out to Portland. Our experienced instructors will ensure you have a great fun day out as well as teaching you lots of new skills. All equipment is provided.
Our Outdoor Rock Taster includes instruction in belaying, basic climbing and movement and lots of climbs to try. The session is suitable for anyone aged 7 and over and requires no previous climbing experience. You can opt for a half day session for just £37.50 per person or a full day for £60 per person. Sessions are available for a minimum group size of 4 and a maximum of 18.
Our Outdoor Bouldering Taster focuses on the techniques for bouldering outdoors and covers mat placement, spotting, basic movement, warm up, technique and access, conservation and environmental factors. The session is suitable for anyone aged 14 and over – experience of bouldering indoors will be useful. The session costs £80 for a full day and sessions run with a minimum group size of 2 and a maximum of 6. See our event diary for our timetable. .
Our Outdoor Boulder Coaching day is designed to help you take your bouldering to the next level. We’ll guide you towards your goals, focusing on movement, technique and the mental as well as physical challenges associated with bouldering outdoors. Some outdoor bouldering experience is essential and participants must be 14 years or older. Coaching days typically last 6 hours and cost £100 per person or £150 for 2 people. The maximum group size is 2 to enable lots of tailored coaching and give participants the chance to really push themselves.
Our Guided Rock Climbing on Dartmoor days offer a great way to enjoy single pitch climbing under the supervision of our experienced guides. Our guides will check your understanding of the lead climbing system, cover how to remove protection, lead belaying and guide you on routes of your choice or their suggestion. Guided days are open to climbers aged 18+ who are proficient lead belayers. Guided days run with a minimum of 1 and maximum of 2 climbers to give the best access to routes and climbing time. 8 hours guiding costs just £140 for one person and £180 for two.
Our Guided Sport Climbing Days are perfect for anyone wishing to enjoy some instructor led sport climbing in the South West. These days are guided to give you the chance to make the most of climbing opportunities with supervision on hand – you will enjoy lots of climbing and be taught the techniques required to sport climb without supervision, including route finding, use of quick draws, clipping and swapping at the chains. Our guided days are ideal for anyone aged 12+ who has experience of indoor lead climbing. We keep the instructor to participant ratios low (around 1:2 to 1:6) to ensure maximum flexibility and enjoyment. The days cost just £75 per person.
Our Setting Up Top Ropes course is run over two days and is designed to teach climbers how to rig a basic top rope set up using sound anchors as well as covering gear placement, personal safety and route finding. The course can be run over two consecutive days or over a couple of weeks. Day 1 will typically focus on equipment, anchor selection, passive protection/gear placement, rigging set up and personal safety away from the crag edge. Teaching will focus on giving climbers practical experience in each of the skills taught, giving climbers the chance to realise the importance of communication, belaying conduct and to consider falls and practice falling. Day 2 will move on to looking at route finding, use of guidebooks, access and conservation issues and focus on climbing as much as possible to put new skills into practice. The course is suitable for competent indoor top rope climbers aged 18+. Courses are run with a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 4 to enable plenty of tailored tuition. Each day will last 8 hours and the total cost of the course is £180 per person.
