events003If you’ve never climbed before and want to have a go take a look at one of  our beginner sessions below – we run sessions for everyone from those who just want to ‘have a go’ to those who want to start using the centre regularly to those who want to have fun with friends or family.  It can be daunting tackling a new sport for the first time, not to mention the fact that many people find heights a little challenging, but our friendly instructors will show you the ropes and have plenty of experience helping newcomers scale their first wall in no time.  All equipment for beginner sessions is included in the session price too!

Our taster sessions are designed for those who just want to ‘have a go’ at climbing.  They are great fun and a brilliant way to start climbing with your friends or family – the perfect birthday present, work social or rainy day activity.  Our instructors will show you the basics of roped climbing and bouldering (climbing on shorter walls without ropes).  The emphasis is on fun and trying as many climbs as possible – in no time you will be at the top of the wall and hooked!  All equipment is provided and your instructor will show you how to manage all the safety equipment.

Sessions last one hour and cost £12.50 per person.  They are suitable for anyone aged 7 upwards.  We run tasters most days and during weekends and holidays we schedule sessions designed specifically for youngsters and family groups.  See our event diary for our timetabled tasters or call the centre to book a time that suits you.  All sessions run on a maximum 1:9 instructor to participant ratio.

Our Induction sessions are for those who want to learn how to use the centre independently.  They are ideal for those who’ve attended a taster session and got the bug, climbers who want a refresher or parents who have a child who is itching to climb and wants you to belay them?  Over two 1 hour sessions our instructors will teach you everything you need to know to  climb independently in the centre and belay another climber.  They work very much like an induction to a gym/health club and are ideal for anyone who thinks they might want to take up climbing more regularly.  The emphasis is on teaching you how to use all the safety equipment, how to fit your harness, how to tie into the rope correctly, how to belay and the basic techniques you will need to begin top rope climbing on your own.  Once you’ve completed an Induction you will be able to:

  • Climb in the centre without supervision or prebooking
  • Belay younger climbers (aged 5+) who wish to climb in the centre – as long as you are just belaying them then you belay for free and you only need to pay for the child to climb
  • Bring along up to 2 guest climbers to climb with you – either novices under your supervision or experienced climbers.

Inductions cost £30 and include two 1 hour instructed sessions (the first covers the basics, the second acts a refresher and technique development session), your annual registration fee at the centre  which would normally cost £7.50 per year, a fantastic voucher package from the Quay including discounts on gear hire and improvers sessions plus new climber discounts from our partner, Taunton Leisure, to help towards your first gear purchase.  Induction Sessions always run on Thursdays from 7.20pm to 8.20pm and Sundays from 4.40pm to 5.40pm however sessions can be scheduled most days of the week.  Check our event diary or call the centre to book your session.   All sessions run on a maximum 1:6 instructor to participant ratio.

If you are a rock monkey or a budding mountain goat then why not join one of our youth climbing clubs?  Climbing can boost confidence, establish team building and improve your stamina and agility.    Young climbers just starting out can have a go by attending a taster session or a birthday party session but for those that want to learn more about the sport then our youth climbing clubs and holiday clubs are the ideal way to learn to climb, under the supervision of our instructors and in the company of other like-minded youngsters.

Monquays Club for 7 – 11 year olds

Monquays sessions are guaranteed to be great fun and help you develop your climbing.  All
members follow our Monquays Award Scheme which tracks your progress in three core areas:  climbing technique; safety and risk awareness and climbing graded routes.  Climbers work towards bronze, silver and gold awards in each area.  With over 45 targets to complete there are challenges for everyone and the aim is to ensure that all climbers graduate from the club able to climb safely, efficiently and are able to belay a partner.   Monquays Club costs £11 per week (typically paid for in 5 or 6 week term blocs) and runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 12noon.  Check out the events diary for term dates and call the centre for more information and booking.

Junior Inductions and Youth Club 11-17 year olds.

Our Junior Induction is designed to give high school age children an all-inclusive course in the basics of climbing.  Run by our youth club team the course is similar to the adult induction and covers everything from how to fit your harness, how to tie into the rope and how to belay to the techniques required to scale the wall efficiently – balance, movement and position.  At the end of the course participants will typically have acquired all the skills to pass their NICAS Level 1 awards – this is a national climbing award scheme that is used in climbing centres and schools across the country.  Junior Inductions cost £50 and run during school holidays.  Check out our events diary for dates or call the centre to schedule one.

Once inducted, young climbers can then join one of our Youth Climbing Clubs.  The youth clubs all follow the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS) which is a UK wide scheme, now recognised by GSCE exam boards across the country.  The scheme accredits young climbers as they progress from the fundamentals (Level 1) to the most advanced climbing (Level 5).  We promise exciting and challenging sessions including instruction in lead climbing for those who want it.    Youth Club costs £11 per week (typically paid for in 5 or 6 week term blocs) and runs on Mondays (4.30pm to 6pm), Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 12 noon.  Check out the events diary for term dates and call the centre for more information and booking.
