Quay Climbing Centre Just Climb!
Welcome to the Quay Climbing Centre – the South West’s largest indoor climbing wall.  We are passionate about climbing and outdoor adventure and want to share our passions with you!  Our aim is simple:  to run a welcoming, safe and vibrant wall for climbers of all ages, abilities and experiences.  We want all our climbers to enjoy climbing at the centre, develop new skills and master existing ones – most importantly we hope you have fun!

The centre makes use of the huge atrium space built into one of Exeter’s largest and iconic industrial buildings – formerly the city’s electricity works.  The climbing arena is full of space and light.  Within the arena we have  85 hangers each with up to 3 lines of climbing making for well over 200 routes to try at any time.  There’s a 14.5 metre lead wall, top roped walls from 7 to 11 metres, 5 auto belays for solo climbers and a dedicated novice zone as well as two boulder caves and training room.   The Workshop Café offers a daily menu of home cooked food prepared on site by Chef Paul, including his famous pizzas, as well as cakes, coffees and Panini’s for you to enjoy after your climb.

If you’ve never climbed before and want to have a go, our friendly instructors will show you the ropes and have you scaling the wall in no time.  Check out our beginner’s page for more information.    Our courses page lists all our courses for novices right up experienced climbers.  For those that want to head outdoors once the days get longer, we run a range of outdoor courses and sessions.  Check out our outdoor page for more information.  For younger rock monkeys we run taster sessions, birthday parties and climbing clubs in term time and holidays.  You’ll find more information on our  young climbers page.

We also use our large space to house other activities that are related to or of benefit to climbing!  Clip ‘n Climb Exeter, an exciting themed climbing adventure for everyone aged 4+ is based in the centre, we also have a space used by freelance osteopaths and sports massage therapists, including the team at Quay Kinetics, and we are the HQ for Exeter Riverside’s weekly parkrun.  For more information on all the other groups and activities based at the centre please check out our other activities page.

We look forward to seeing you at the centre very soon!

Climbing is what we do best and with 85 hangers each with the potential for 3 lines of climbing we offer well over 200 routes for you to try.  Our walls range in height from 7 to 15 metres and our routes cover the entire range of climbs from grade 2 for little beginners to grade f8c.  Each of our 7 climbing zones offers something different from slabs to chimneys, arches and the 3.5 metre overhang on our lead wall, The Prow.  The large climbing arena benefits from lots of natural light from the atrium’s glass roof tiles and plenty of room in between and around climbs.

Routes are changed regularly by our in house team led by one of the region’s leading setters, Mikey Cleverdon,  together with Gavin Atkins, Neil Empringham and Lainy Budden.   We also have regular visits from some of the UK’s leading route setters including Gav Symonds, Yan Gennouf and Mark ‘Zippy’ Pretty.

Find out more about the climbing challenges on: The Quarry, The Buttress, The Big Corner, The Arch, The Pillar, Billy’s Wall and the The Prow and our Auto Belays please look at our climbing page.

Our two bouldering caves offer something for boulderers of all levels.  Boulder Cave 1 is the place to be if you like roof problems or are starting to build your strength as it features our 10 degree training wall.  Boulder Cave 2 is where the training opportunities really ramp with a 40 degree training wall and heavily featured walls.  Our Summer and Winter Bouldering Leagues keep boulderers on their toes with monthly challenges of between 25 and 30 problems for you to try in addition to our popular circuit board.

Our new Training Room located next to Boulder Cave 2 enables climbers to complete their training programmes in house with two fingerboards, campus boards and pull up bars with lots of toys to strengthen your grip on different types of holds.

Whether you are taking a break from climbing, want to watch your family and friends on the wall or just want a decent coffee, The Workshop Café is the place for you to relax.  Floor to ceiling views of the main climbing hall and the Clip ‘n Climb arena guarantee you a great view of the action below.  Chef Paul, our resident Chef (who happens to be an Instructor too) runs the café and prepares a menu of specials from home-made burgers and pasties to warming curries, savoury tarts and our speciality – homemade pizzas.  We’ve always got a wide selection of paninis and yummy cakes as well as being a stockist of Mule Bars for refuelling after heavy training sessions.

Free wifi is available throughout the café – just ask at reception for the password.
