There is climbing for everyone at the Quay Climbing Centre, the South West's largest, dedicated indoor climbing wall.  The centre breathes new life into the Old Electricity Works, one of Exeter's most identifiable buildings where, at over 15 metres at the apex, the atrium provides a majestic space in which to climb.

 

If you are new to this exciting sport, find out more from our friendly team.  Try one of our introductory courses or bring your family and friends along for a taster session - you'll soon be climbing like a pro.  Reach new highs with a climbing based birthday party or group social!  With over 200 climbing lines, walls ranging from 7 to 14 metres, plus two bouldering caves, two training walls, a teaching zone and abseil tower there really is something for everyone.    

The Quay Climbing Centre is an Associate Member of the ABC (Association of British Climbing Walls) and is a Primary Centre for the provision of NICAS courses to young climbers

 

 

clubs, family taster sessions and more...

where else can you find a sport that is challenging, exhilarating, fun and weatherproof!  Climbing can boost confidence, establish team-building and improve your stamina and agility.  We have lots of ways that young climbers can participate in the sport - with friends and family or as part of one of our clubs!  

Family Taster Sessions

 Come along to one of our Family Taster Sessions where we can teach you the basics and help you scale your first wall.  Why not bring your friends - be warned they might get hooked?  Family Tasters run every Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 3pm and throughout the day during the School Holidays, additional sessions can be scheduled on request.  Sessions are suitable for groups of 2-9 climbers aged 7+. 

Junior Climbing Club - for 7 to 16 year olds

Our junior climbing club is open to anyone between the ages of 7 and 16.  Make new friends and meet climbing buddies.  Our friendly instructors will help you master the basics and improve your skills on the wall.  Instruction will be based on the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS), which club members can sign up for. The scheme is a UK-wide programme which promotes climbing development for young people and accredits their achievements.  The Quay is a registered NICAS teaching centre. 

Clubs run on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10am to 12 noon and Mondays from 4pm to 5.30pm.  They cost £60 for a 6 week block.  Advance booking is essential so call now to reserve your place or join the waiting list.   For youngsters signed up to the scheme or those who are looking to join, we run NICAS based training days during school holidays.  Watch this space or our facebook page for dates ahead of each vacation.  NICAS holiday sessions are structured around the scheme and help you continue your progress during the break. 

Holiday Clubs - for 7 to 14 year olds

 our Holiday Clubs which are a great way to get active in the holidays and learn to climb with other like minded youngsters.  Half Term Club will be running in the May half term.  You can sign up to as many sessions as you like - club will be open on Tuesday 28th May, Wednesday 29th May and Thursday 30th May from 10.30am to 12.30pm and is a great way to learn to climb or continue your climbing in a safe and friendly environment.

Holiday NICAS Sessions

For youngsters signed up the NICAS scheme or those who are interested in joining and accrediting their progress, we will be holiding weekly NICAS sessions throughout the school holidays so you.  During  each holiday we will schedule weekly NICAS sessions, typically on a Friday from 1.00pm to 2.30pm.  Sessions will be structured around the NICAS programme in order to help you continue to train and progress over the holiday! The cost is £15 per session.

The Quay Squad

For young climbers with more experience who wish to progress their training the Quay runs a Youth Squad for 11-16 year olds and a Young Guns Squad for 7 to 10 year olds.  The Squad trains regularly together and will compete across the region.  Selection trials are held periodically from our club members and climbers we spot in the centre.  This year our squad has competed in local competitions as well as the British Youth Climbing Series - two of our members have made it onto the BMC South West Squad and will be competing in the national youth finals in Edinburgh in June!  For more information contact Cherry Bedford or Paul Russell at the Quay.

climbing offers children a sporting experience that can increase fitness and agility, foster trust between peers, build leadership skills and develop a keen understanding of how to manage and assess risk.  

The Quay has been designed with the needs of groups in mind. Our dedicated novice zone, abseil tower and fully equipped instruction space will help ensure your young climbers get the most out of their visit to the centre.  Our maximum 1:9 instructor to child ratio helps us deliver a fun and rewarding experience to each participant, whatever their age or ability.  We are able to offer sessions tailored to your specific requirements or longer programmes such as:  

  • Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
  • Youth climbing competitions
  • Units towards GCSE PE, BTEC Level 2 Sport, BTEC Level 2 Public Services, NCFE Level 1 Award in Personal Development for the Outdoor Industry
  • Gifted and Talented programmes
  • National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS)

 

 The Quay is an accredited provider of the NICAS scheme set up to develop and accredit climbing skills amongst young climbers.

 Fun packed activity days - the Quay is the perfect venue for your group activity day.  We can offer a fun filled day of challenges centred around the wall and our Clip 'n Climb arena.   Why not combine this with a visit to Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre - promising a day of climbing and water-based challenges that your pupils will not forget.

enjoy the view from the Workshop cafe...

whether you're taking a break from climbing, want to watch your family and friends on the wall or just want a decent coffee, the Workshop Cafe is the place for you.  Floor to ceiling views of the main hall and Clip 'n Climb arena guarantee you a great view of the action below and you can definitely claim the ring side seat from which to observe anyone who dares take the 'Leap of Faith' in Clip n Climb!

The cafe is run by Chef Paul and our team of instructors.  We are now offering an extensive range of coffees, teas and homemade cakes, panini's, toasties and pasta salads.  Pizzas and chips are available to order at lunchtime, during the evening and all day during the weekend and watch our daily specials board for Chef Paul's amazing dish of the day!  The cafe has something to please everyone from climbers wishing to 're-fuel' to families enjoying a post climb lunch or snack.  Free WIFI access is available in the cafe area - just ask at reception or the cafe tils for the access code!  We're one of only a handful of venues in the Quayside area to be able to offer this service!

 

 

Climbing and outdoor magazines are available throughout the cafe as well as a selection of toys and books to entertain toddlers and younger children.
